Elephant & Castle and Delancey

by marialinforth-hall on 5 October, 2014

ShoppingCentre2008After my election as Councillor last May, I promised to meet with Delancey, who are the new owners of the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre. I wanted to do this because I know how important the Centre is to the Latin community. We use the Centre and the railway arches in Elephant Road regularly for shopping, eating and drinking. And there are important Latin businesses trading in the area. So we are all anxious to know what is going on.

On 13 August I was finally able to meet with several members of the Delancey Team. We discussed the present state of affairs and their plans for the redevelopment. Delancey have to liaise with Lend Lease (Southwark Councils development partner) and with Network Rail who are the owners of the railway arches.

Delancey mentioned that they have been holding one to one meetings with tenants to ascertain their immediate needs. Delancey will also be holding a series of workshops and meetings in the autumn culminating in a public exhibition towards the end of November although these plans may alter as events unfold.

They are not anticipating mayor disruption to the present site for at least two years. They say that they are anxious to listen and to do their best to ensure that valuable businesses get relocated during construction, and are given the opportunity to return to the new development on completion. For this, they say that they will undertake a process of careful assessment and consultation.

The stated aim of the development is to transform the site over the coming years, to provide facilities for local retailers and shoppers. My view is that the businesses run by the Latin community make a major contribution to the life of the Elephant and to the growing popularity of the area (visits to the Centre increased from 10.58 million in 2012 to 11.3 million in 2013). I want to help the Latin community to liaise with the developers, to maintain this crucial Latin character in their plans, and to provide what help I can to the Latin businesses in their dealings with Delancey. They say that they are working with other developers to try and ensure that the Latin American community remains in Elephant & Castle through the redevelopment of the area.
